Portrait of Aniket Nagdive in dhoti and kurta

Aniket Nagdive

Aniket wears a white kurta and a gold dhoti from Maharashtra, India. Over the kurta is a cream angavastram, a shoulder cloth men wear for religious and ceremonial occasions, here draped across the front and around the arms. On his feet are Kolhapuri chappals, handmade leather sandals from Maharashtra, worn with kurta, dhoti, or sherwani at weddings and festivals.

Stone reliefs from around the 2nd century BCE show men and women in garments like the dhoti. The kurta, a loose tunic, is worn across the subcontinent.

For Aniket, this is one of India's oldest ways of dressing, and he keeps it going.
