Portrait of Sosina Getachew Admasu in Habesha Kemis with a coffee ceremony set

Sosina Getachew Admasu

Sosi wears the Habesha Kemis, the dress Ethiopian and Eritrean women wear for weddings, graduations, church, and holidays. It is made of Shemma, a light handspun cotton. The Tilet is the colored border on the cuffs, neck, and hem. Its colors and patterns once showed social status or religion.

With the dress, Sosi presents the Ethiopian coffee ceremony. A grass mat, the ketema, goes on the floor to stand for nature. In the middle sits the Jebena, a long-necked clay pot, and the Cini, small cups without handles. The ceremony is an offering, a reason for family and friends to sit down together.
