Frida Alvarez

Frida wears a modern take on traditional Indigenous dress. The huipilli-style shirt was made in Zacatlán, Mexico. The feathers were once quetzal. Now they are pheasant, swapped so the practice fits the birds around her while keeping to the old form.

At her ankles are ayayotes, seed rattles. They sound with the drums during Danza, so her body becomes an instrument in the dance.

Frida is of Mexican and Ecuadorian heritage and is reclaiming her Indigenous roots. Each piece she wears is part of that return.
