Portrait of Shika Kalevor in kente cloth

Shika Kalevor

This hand-woven Kente cloth is the fabric Shika wore at her traditional wedding in Ghana. It is heavy, and the weight reminds her how much her culture holds.

Holding it, she feels the weight of her people's journey: the travel, the endurance, the sacrifices that put her here. She does not carry that lightly.

On her forehead is an Adinkra symbol in gold. It means humility and strength, and it marks who she is and where she comes from.

She means to pass the cloth down through the generations.
