Nyalat Dojiok in a blue lawa and beaded tik headband Portrait of Nyalat Dojiok wearing tik and lawa, Nuer attire
1 / 2

Nyalat Dojiok

Nyalat wears tik, a beaded necklace and headband of the Nuer people of South Sudan, and a lawa, a body wrap. She was born and raised in America, far from the Nuer community, and these pieces keep her close to her roots.

They show who she is and where her culture comes from. Wearing them, she can honor a part of herself that is not always visible in her daily life.

They tie her to Nuer tradition and history, and to the generations before her who wore the same things with pride.

Most of all, they give her a place to belong: her people, her family, her ancestral homeland, even from America.
